The project supports India’s transition to clean road transport by mapping and projecting truck emissions through 2050, focusing on heavy freight vehicles that contribute disproportionately to on-road emissions. The study provides a baseline and future scenarios to guide the adoption of zero-emission technologies (ZET), supporting policymakers in prioritizing actions to reduce GHG and criteria pollutant emissions from the trucking sector.

OBJECTIVE

The study supports India’s clean transport goals by mapping and projecting emissions from heavy-duty trucks through 2050. Focusing on vehicles over 3.5 tons GVW, which contribute significantly to GHG and NOx emissions, it provides baseline and future scenarios to guide the phased adoption of zero-emission technologies (ZET) aligned with India’s 2070 net-zero target.

Our Core Values

supply-side analysis

Conducted a supply-side analysis of the MHDT market, creating a detailed OEM product database by GVW, payload, fuel type, and market share, covering sales trends and ZEV capabilities across segments.

demand-side analysis

Conducted a demand-side analysis of the MHDT fleet, profiling use cases by ownership, fleet share, operations, overloading trends, and business models to identify common fleet sizes and characteristics across applications.

GHG emissions profiling

Projected MHDT demand and GHG emissions from 2030 to 2050 in five-year intervals using economic indicators and growth trends, developing inventories under both BAU and BTB scenarios.

ZET roadmap

Formulated a ZET roadmap for India with phased strategies across planning, procurement, operations, and scale-up, supported by truck emissions projections and mapping through 2050.

Policy Analysis

Reviewed relevant policies, plans, regulations, and standards, including emission norms, Corporate Social Responsibility Framework (CSFC) norms, and fuel quality standards. This policy analysis aimed to identify supporting or conflicting factors regarding the transition to zero-emission technologies (ZET).
