The aim of the study was to carry out in-depth study of Internationally Complaint Green Hydrogen Standard across the value chain and conduct gap assessment of the Indian Standards’

Objective

Supported by GIZ and MNRE under IGEF’s PtX Hub Programme, this study aims to strengthen India’s green hydrogen value chain by developing regulations, standards, and certifications. It addresses critical gaps in hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol sectors through global benchmarking, ensuring safety and interoperability while supporting India’s climate goals and fostering international energy collaboration.

Our Approach

Comprehensive Green Hydrogen Value Chain

Developed a comprehensive Green Hydrogen Value Chain mapping all stages and sub-stages, and analyzed national hydrogen strategies, policy priorities, Guarantees of Origin mechanisms, and governance systems in the EU, US, and Japan to identify best practices for accelerating green hydrogen ecosystems and achieving targets

Policy Benchmarking

Analyzed national hydrogen strategies, policy priorities, Guarantees of Origin mechanisms, and governance systems in the European Union (EU), United States (US), and Japan. This evaluation identified instruments used by different regions to accelerate their green hydrogen ecosystems and achieve set targets

Green Hydrogen Standards Gap Analysis

Our gap analysis classified green hydrogen standards by adequacy (up-to-date to non-existent) and adaptability (direct adoption to major revisions), leading to actionable recommendations for India’s value chain.

MNRE's certification scheme for green hydrogen

Evaluated MNRE's certification scheme for green hydrogen and suggested recommendations for enhancement, including a timeline to incorporate energy attribute, environmental sustainability, and social/economic sustainability parameters

Outcome

MNRE released a notification of the Green Hydrogen Standard for India, which defines green hydrogen as having well-to-gate emissions of no more than 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg H2
