The high monetary value of a transformer has placed the transformer life-time optimization into the focus of asset management. Distribution Transformer (DT) is one of most important and high CAPEX assets for DISCOMs. For overall DISCOM viability, it is important that each individual DT is turned into a profit centre. It is estimated that of 24% national average AT&C losses, at least 3-4%  comes from Technical losses in DTs, and it can be brought down to 0.5% and below. RAPDRP reform has envisaged utilities to carry out an energy audit of a DT for monitoring inherent losses (at least on a sampling basis) but unfortunately, this keeps missing the attention, to the extent that DT technical losses are not even measured till it breaks down. And only broken-down DTs are sent for repair, and there is minimum to none pro-active approach to DT repair and O&M.

DT failure rate is one of the important KPI for Indian DISCOMs. Any failure of the DT before expiration of its designed lifespan results in unplanned outage, production loss, unavailability of critical services and in most cases huge financial losses to both utilities and customers. Overall, it affects the reliability of the network. Hence, it is important to set things right during the repairs of the transformer.

This webinar therefore brings expert sharing the best practices followed for repairs of distribution transformer. Below are the key highlights of the discussion:

  • Best DT repair practice followed at Indian Discoms
  • Improving Life cycle management of DTs
  • Measures taken to reduce losses cropping from legacy DTs
  • Innovative solution that can help loss reduction in DTs

Key Talkpoints

  • Impact of good DT repair practice on reducing losses in the network (specially on the technical losses)
  • Standard DT repair practice followed at Discom. Any challenges faced and how you improved it.  (with case study with top level results or example can be shared)
  • Challenges foreseen in the existing repair practice. Any regulatory or policy change help in improving repair practice.
  • Suggestions/improvements to other Discoms that will help improve the DT situation

  • Typically, public Discoms have reasonable legacy DTs leaking losses in the system. What should Indian Discoms do to curb losses from legacy DTs in the network?
  • Innovative solution or suggestions for improving the reliability and efficiency of DTs
